How to create a BSM group



This is an example of creating and managing a BSM group.

Configuring BSM group settings

From the View groups screen you can select the pencil icon to display the group's configuration, or you could also get there by clicking the Manage groups tab. The image below describes the major areas within the definition.

Viewing BSM in Status

The GroundWork Monitor default BSM group is configured to monitor the localhost with core services so the status can be quickly determined at the top level.

  1. Log in to GroundWork Monitor as an administrator (e.g. admin/admin).
  2. Select Status where you can view any defined BSM groups from the tree view:
    • The top level BSM Host Group BSM: Business Objects uses the bubble-up status feature and indicates the most severe state for the overall group based on essential settings or defined thresholds.
    • The BSM Host Group contains the Host Definition BSM:bsm-host which contains the Service Definition bsm-service-01 with status for the selected hosts, services, service groups and business service monitoring group members.

  1. Log in to GroundWork Monitor as an  administrator (e.g. admin/admin).
  2. Mouse over Business and select Business Service Monitoring, you will see a list of configured BSM groups.
    • Like the Status view, the top level indicates the most severe state of the group based on its thresholds (or essential selections). This example shows an OK status. Refreshing of BSM groups takes place every 30 seconds.
    • Next, in the example you can see the group described as GroundWork Monitor has 0 problem(s), a URL was set in the group definition for related reference, and if thresholds were set a count indicator W/C #/# would be displayed showing the number of group members with warning and critical states.
      URL examples:


    • The pencil icon is a direct edit button which goes to the groups definition page versus selecting a group from the Manage groups tab.
    • Monitoring only, when checked, will display only groups that have Monitoring checked in the definition.
    • High priority, when checked, will display only group with a priority set to high in the definition.

  3. Clicking the arrow next to the group name exposes the groups status detail. Members not in a problem state will be summarized, shown here as 6 Members are running in good situations. Members in a problem state would display the host name, service name, and type of problem including Acknowledged or Downtime.

  4. Continuing down the levels, clicking the *status indicator* (e.g. *OK*, shown above) exposes the groups members and their states based on the configured thresholds, along with host and service drill-down ability to Status viewer for device details.
